Study for 'Seperation' , 2019

Study for 'Seperation' , 2019 is a tonal study produced in preparation for the major painting 'Seperation'.

Simplified, silent, and precisely rendered, the work presents a single horse casting a shadow over a small Romano-British pot. The frieze on the pot depicts four horses being led in a chariot race. The soft undulation of the relaxed and tense muscles of the horse exaggerates its  sculptural form; making it seem both alive and intensely archaic and suggests a relationship between the real horse and its representation through art. The empty pot too implies a sense of loss and of memory.
